After a bad dream

Nightmare Recovery Guide

If you woke up scared, calm the body first and interpret the dream second. A clearer nervous system makes the meaning easier to read.

01

Name the room

Look around and name five ordinary things you can see. This tells your body the dream scene is over.

02

Slow the breath

Take four slower breaths. Just make the exhale a little longer than the inhale.

03

Separate image from meaning

Write one sentence about what happened and one sentence about how it felt. Save interpretation until you feel steadier.

Gentle note

Nightmare content can be intense without being literal. If dreams are frequent, overwhelming, or connected to trauma, it can help to speak with a qualified mental health professional.

When to use the free reading

Use it after you feel calmer. Include the scene, the strongest feeling, who appeared, whether you escaped, and what image stayed with you after waking.
